Whether you're visiting the City of Angels as a single looking for love, a romantic couple or with kids in tow, you'll never be short of things to do. And they're not all expensive:
The Getty Center is proof that LA can offer high art as well as low culture. And, in this case, high art is cheaper. Well actually, it's free. There's no charge for the Van Goghs, stunning modern architecture, beautiful gardens, breathtaking views or even the entertainment on a Friday night. Just head out of the city along 405.
For a reminder of what going to the movies used to be like in the days before soulless multiplexes, do not miss out on a visit to one of LA's beautifully preserved old theaters. The Chinese, next door to new home of the Oscars the Kodak Theater on Hollywood Boulevard, is the best-known picture palace in the world. But many prefer the Disney-owned and restored El Capitan with its extravagant 1920s interior or Sid Grauman's other theatre, The Egyptian, which has also recently been brought back to its former glory.
Not just for the kids, although they provide an ideal excuse, LA is overflowing with theme parks. Disneyland is the benchmark by which all others are judged. But Knott's Berry Farm has its loyal supporters who find it more relaxed. Detractors say it's plain rundown. Universal Studios is a place where real TV shows and movies are made, but it also includes a fun tour complete with King Kong and earthquakes.
Weekends at Venice Beach are what Lala land is all about. Body builders, roller-bladers and the most colorful bunch of eccentrics ever gathered in one place makes Ocean Front Walk just the ideal spot to hang out. Don't miss the sunset any day of the week.
Rodeo Drive provides a strange sort of democracy. The hordes in tee shirts and shorts window shop. Then, suddenly, a limo will pull up and it's time to play 'spot the celebrity'. A few seconds later it's all over. Check it out before you pick up one of the star tours of Beverly Hills.
