Los Angeles is not one city, but many. It has no center. There is no 'real LA'. But that does not mean it is a place without a heart. Look hard enough and you'll find one, although it might be as real as angel dust.
Downtown As a tourist you may never pass this way at all. About 16 miles in from the coast, it's where many of the businesses are and a few of the museums.
Hollywood Tacky, dirty, noisy, it's those things. That's entertainment. You can't miss Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame.
West Hollywood Not for the feint hearted, this where you'll find the city's hottest clubs along with some of the ritziest hotels and shopping. Sunset Strip remains the nightlife focus as it has for decades. This is also the center of the gay and lesbian community.
Beverly Hills and the Westside This is it, 90210. Designer shops in Rodeo Drive and mansions in the hills -it's enough to make even the rich feel poor.
Santa Monica You know it from Baywatch. The pier, the ocean, it's a good place to hang out.
Malibu For 27 miles the Pacific Coast Highway runs past beach after beach overlooked by the mansions of the stars.
Venice There is nowhere else quite like it. Funky cafes and bars, art galleries, antique shops and wacky boutiques make this a great place to visit. But it's the people you've really got to see.
San Fernando Valley This is suburbia, love it or loathe it. But amidst the strip malls are the studios where many of your favorite TV shows and movies are made.
South Central and Compton Gangsta rap and riots have made this area notorious. But those willing to brave it will find some great live music clubs and restaurants around Crenshaw and Leimert Park.
Long Beach Best known as the final home of the majestic Queen Mary ocean liner now moored in the bay and open for tours.
South Bay This is made up of a quiet collection of pleasant beach towns.
Orange County Amidst the green manicured suburbs you'll find the Richard Nixon Memorial Library, Disneyland in Anaheim and the beach communities of Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and Dana Point.
Pasadena Old Town Pasadena has what some say is the best collection of bars, shops, cafes and restaurants in LA.
East LA Latinos make up the largest ethnic group in LA and this where you'll find their greatest focus.
