Some cities have old-world charm, or bustling modern efficiency, or natural splendor or breath-taking architecture. The German city of Munich is one of the few places in the world that combines them all.
Located close to the foothills of the Alps - 'Muenchen', as the capital of Bavaria is called in German - has become one of the most modern and prosperous cities in post-war Germany. A leading player in the high-tech industries, it is renowned for the automotive, electronic and computing companies that have helped turn it into one of Europe's most diverse and dynamic cities.
A beautiful city whose blend of ancient and modern architecture creates a charming yet vibrant ambience, Munich boasts a wealth of art galleries, shops, theaters and museums. From the world-famous Haus der Kunst (House of Art), to the impressive Deutsches Museum (German Museum of Science and Technology), Bavaria's leading light has something to offer visitors, no matter where their interests lie.
Strolling through the city's enigmatic blend of historic charm and chic sophistication, visitors are enraptured by a town where baroque churches, splendid palaces and beautiful parks jostle with art galleries, theaters and modern shops for attention. From the nudist park in the center to the plentiful beer gardens and one of the hottest dance hall scenes in Germany, this place really does have something for everybody.
When To Go
Munich is an all-year-round city, with plenty to do no matter when you find yourself there. Summers are generally sunny and warm with a few wet or cloudy days, and temperatures between 11 and 23 degrees Celsius (51 and 74 Fahrenheit). During the winter months, temperatures can drop below freezing (between -3 and 5 Celsius; 23 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit) often with some snowfall.
That makes the run-up to the holiday season one of the most attractive times to be in the city's squares, filled with romantic Christmas fairs.
By far the most popular time to visit the city is in October, when the 16-day Oktoberfest takes place along Munich's famous Theresenwiese. The popular 16-day festival, with its traditional brass bands, fun fairs and perpetual flow of beer, originates from the engagement of Prince Ludwig and Princess Theresa in 1810.
