Where to eat is always a problem - there's so much choice. Whether you're after a po'boy and a brew or the finest French cuisine, you won't have to look far. Just watch out for the chilli sauce. It bites.
Café du Monde (800 Decatur St). The menu's short, not much more than strong coffee, orange juice and beignets, New Orlean's answer to the donut. But the atmosphere is where it's at in this 24-hour-a-day outdoor eatery by the banks of the Mississippi. It's a definite "must-see".
Acme Oyster House (724 Iberville St). For nearly a century they've been shucking oysters at this same spot in the French Quarter. It's boisterous, loud and more than a little theatrical. That's the spirit of New Orleans. You don't have to eat oysters here - although you should give one a try - otherwise check out the po'boys, gumbo and jambalaya.
Bella Luna (914 N Peters St. Phone: (504) 529-1583). Not every joint in the Big Easy is bold and brash. This is one of the most romantic restaurants in the USA. (Tip: When you book, ask for one of the booths overlooking the Mississippi.) The food is a delicate mix of Creole and continental European. Mouth-watering.
Court of Two Sisters (613 Royal St Phone: (504) 522-7261). Although the food is stunning at any time of day, it's brunch in the French Quarter's largest courtyard that really stands out. As a jazz band plays quietly in the background, enjoy the usual breakfast dishes along with salad, boiled seafood and southern favorites such as grits and grillades.
Cafe Degas (3127 Esplanade Ave. Phone: (504) 945-5635). Named after the French artist who painted this part of town, this little hideaway can be hard to find. That pleases some locals who want to keep this secret to themselves. Those who do discover this restaurant are rewarded with excellent French cuisine at reasonable prices in a casual atmosphere. There can't be many other restaurants with a mature oak tree that grows from the middle of the floor and out of the roof.
