For a city best known for its dampness, it's strange that its population has a reputation for living much of its life in the great outdoors. That's partly because Seattle is blessed with stunning scenery that is only a few minutes away, even from downtown.
One in four of the population owns a boat, and everybody else seems to know somebody who has one. An even larger proportion owns mountain bikes and nobody's allowed to stay more than a week without hiking boots.
The city's damp reputation is also a little unfair. There are many wetter places in the Midwest. It's just that they tend to get their rain all at once, whereas Seattle spreads it across more overcast days.
Locals make up for the weather with caffeine and microbreweries. Then when the sun shines they take full advantage of what this growing and exciting city has to offer.
When To Go
Summer is the best time. It never gets too hot, although it's certainly warm enough to fill the city beaches on many days. Winters are fairly mild so it doesn't snow that often. But when it does, there's enough moisture to make the falls heavy. Spring and fall tend to combine all seasons, often in a single day. Whenever you come, bring something waterproof.
