For a medium-sized city there's a remarkable amount going on in Seattle. From cutting-edge arts to live music, from the Olympic Mountains to the beaches, for kids and for adults, you'll not get bored. Check these out for starters.
The Space Needle is Seattle's answer to the Eiffel Tower or the Empire State Building, the symbol of the city. If you can, take a ride up on a clear day and catch views that range from jagged peaks, shimmering water to the high-rise panorama of downtown.
The Experience Music Project or EMP is at the foot of the needle. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen began the project as a tribute to Seattle-born Jimi Hendrix. Around $250 million later the result is a stunning multimedia museum of the history of rock 'n' roll with something for everybody from punks to baby-boomers.
Argosy Cruises are another cool way to see the scenery and city skyline. Dress up a little for a romantic dinner cruise or take a tour of the lakes for some proper rubbernecking. That's when you'll get the best chance to check out the Bill Gates mansion.
Pike Place Market is the real heart of Seattle. Built in 1907, it's an ever-changing mixture of spices, beautifully displayed vegetables, arts, street performers and, of course, produce from the sea. Don't miss the flying fish.
Bill Spiedel's underground tour is like nothing else you've ever seen. The guide takes you under the city streets, past abandoned storefronts, with a humorous running commentary that will give you an insight into the city that will stay with you even when you're above ground.
