The Upper Pusteria Valley, surrounded by the imposing Dolomites of Sesto, surmounted by the Three Peaks of Lavaredo, and by the Dolomites of Braies, is a paradise for winter and summer holidaymakers.
At a height ranging from 1,130 to 3,000m, guests can choose between 27 ski lifts, 50 km of slopes, 200 km of cross-country runs and 5 tobogganing slopes, all served by ski-buses.
The Upper Pusteria Valley is also the headquarters of the World Snowboarding Championships and various other sports events including the cross-country skiing marathon. In winter, skiing is a very popular activity in Altapusteria. The main skiing areas extend around the 5 main villages of Sesto, San Candido, Dobbiaco, Villabassa and Braies. There are rarely queues for lifts, no crowds on the slopes, gentle slopes for families and also downhills and ski touring for the professionals. Those of you who love cross-country skiing have 200 km of routes - really a true paradise for fans.
Not to mention the tradition festival of snow sculptures. The rules are very simple and very attractive for the spectators: fresh snow from the surrounding area will be pressed together in 3x3x3m blocks which will be located in different areas of both of the villages.
These blocks are sculpted by 10 teams competing against one another. Apart from the tools, the sculptors can use only water - water which will be soon ice regarding the freezing winter temperatures of the area!
The sculptures, which have to be finished within 3 days, are then inspected and voted for by tourists and local residents.
During summer, tourists can make various excursions to the 2 natural parks which feature 35 refuges, spa centers and cable cars.
The summer events include the Dolomites Superbike race, the marathon of the Three Cime and, for lovers of good music, the Gustav Mahler week. The Gustave Mahler week is a week packed with concerts, film shows, town festivals, art exhibitions and literature readings...perfect for culture vultures!
Visitors can also enjoy bike rides over the border and guided excursions... it just remains for us to say, enjoy your holidays!
